Essential Tractor Safety Tips
The tractor is an endlessly useful piece of farm equipment that agricultural operations around the world depend upon every day. If you’re a proud tractor owner, you also know how important it is to be responsible. Here are some basic tractor safety tips you can follow to do just that.
Read Your Owner’s Manual
The manual that came with your tractor has a lot of valuable information within its pages. Use it to learn how your tractor works and where all the controls are. Keep this manual handy so you can refer to it as needed for tips on maintenance or operation.
Wear Safety Gear
It’s inadvisable to wear a T-shirt and sneakers when you’re about to operate a piece of heavy machinery like a tractor. Instead, wear clothing that covers your body and fits closely, without any draping fabric or loose cords. Tie long hair up out of the way. Wear a pair of goggles, a heavy-duty pair of work gloves, and steel-toed boots with the laces tucked in. Nothing you wear should be able to get caught up in the machinery of your tractor.
Exercise Caution
When you’re in the cab and actively operating your tractor, it’s important that you remain vigilant and move with caution, particularly if you’re working around people or animals. Everyone around you should clear the way when the tractor is moving. Whenever you dismount the tractor, make sure that it is parked and that the engine has been shut off.
