Your tractor is a hardy beast, capable of assisting you with many different tasks on your farm or ranch. And tractors are specifically designed with treads or tires that are rugged and knobby, capable of getting decent traction on uneven terrain. However, there is one thing that can stop you and your tractor in your tracks (or tires): a big, sticky patch of mud. If your tractor ends up stuck in the mud, here are some strategies you can try to get it free again.

Fetch a Shovel

If you have a shovel, use it to dig out mud from around the wheels or tracks of your tractor. This will help make it easier to drive back out again, no matter what method you try next.

Try Reversing

Get in your cab and slowly try to reverse your tractor at an even speed. If you find the wheels spinning or you’re not making headway, stop and park again so you don’t get stuck deeper.

Grab Some Planks

A few long planks of flat wood can be jimmied underneath your rear tires or tracks to give you some better traction. Line the planks up with your tires and carefully drive your tractor onto them.

Call a Friend

If you’ve got a neighbor or friend who lives nearby with a tractor, you may simply have to give them a call to see if they can come to your aid. A winch and some chains can allow them to tug your tractor far enough out of the mud that you can drive out again.
